Thriller Movies In Amazon Prime

And, in terms of thrillers, Prime offers a really good variety that is becoming better by the month. You may watch everything from criminal capers to classic stories of psychological suspense, or you can discover something new and strange that you’ve never heard of before – dark and unsettling material. Whether you’re a thriller veteran or simply seeking to get your feet wet in the genre, you could discover your next film here.

15. Akilla’s Escape

As if the high-stakes, perilous world of the gangland thriller wasn’t already tense enough, “Akilla’s Escape” amps up the tension by anchoring itself in the stoicism of its central character — a world-weary Akilla (Saul Williams) who knows this dangerous world all too well and is attempting to keep a young boy from becoming too familiar with it himself. Everything in this film, from the artistic decisions to the soundtrack (which Williams also contributed to), supports the personal and societal conflict between the past, the present, and the choices that move us between them.

  • Starring: Saul Williams, Thamela Mpumlwana, Vic Mensa
  • Director: Charles Officer
  • Year: 2020
  • Runtime: 90 minutes
  • Rating: NR
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 84%

14. Blow Out

Based on Michelangelo Antonioni’s “Blowup,” Brian De Palma’s “Blow Out” substitutes audio recordings for images in this narrative about a film sound effects worker (John Travolta) who hears what may be a political killing recorded on tape. But was it a murder or just a random collection of sounds? And will he be able to solve the mystery before someone silences him? It’s a thriller that still packs a punch, and it’s one of De Palma’s greatest pictures.

  • Starring: John Travolta, Nancy Allen, John Lithgow
  • Director: Brian De Palma
  • Year: 1981
  • Runtime: 107 minutes
  • Rating: NR
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 85%

13. The Boondock Saints

“The Boondock Saints” lived up to the initial expectations surrounding its innovative script, but it took a circuitous route to get there. Its success appears to be contrary to anything anybody involved could have predicted. Critics loathed it when it first came out, presumably because it was fraught with controversy and studio politics, and it was only shown in a few places. Nonetheless, the picture went on to generate a sizable amount of money in DVD sales and has become a cult favorite among moviegoers.

Because of stars like Norman Reedus and Willem Dafoe, the film has acquired a position in pop culture. Furthermore, it offers an engaging tale that weaves together themes of family and justice as a set of twin brothers become vigilantes and battle Russian mobsters. all while evading an FBI agent’s relentless pursuit.

  • Starring: Willem Dafoe, Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus
  • Director: Troy Duffy
  • Year: 1999
  • Runtime: 108 minutes
  • Rating: NR
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 28%

12. Burning

While “Parasite” was the first South Korean film to be nominated for an Oscar (among other things), “Burning” had made moves in the right direction the year before. Though it was not chosen as a Best Foreign Language Picture candidate, it was the first South Korean film to make the nine-film shortlist.

And it’s simple to understand why. The narrative revolves around a love triangle between three young individuals, which appears to be heading in a very dark way. The performances are tough and riveting, and the suspense is expertly built. You’ll be uneasy the entire time, and that’s on purpose. There’s want and envy, distrust and illusion — but the wait for this kindling to catch fire is agonizingly, enthrallingly slow.

  • Starring: Yoo Ah-in, Steven Yeun, Jeon Jong-Seo
  • Director: Lee Chang-dong
  • Year: 2018
  • Runtime: 148 minutes
  • Rating: Not Rated
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 95%

11. The Courier

“The Courier” is a bit of a history lesson, but it does a far better job of keeping the audience’s attention. It is based on a genuine infiltration of the Soviet Union’s nuclear program, which was essential in bringing the Cuban Missile Crisis to a conclusion. The gloomy tones and real-world stakes make the tension feel all too genuine, with a frightening Benedict Cumberbatch in the starring role as a British businessman turned spy.

  • Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Merab Ninidze, Rachel Brosnahan
  • Director: Dominic Cooke
  • Year: 2020
  • Runtime: 111 minutes
  • Rating: NR
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 85%

The Coen brothers received their first Academy Award for penning “Fargo,” a dark comedy about a botched abduction scheme and the heroic local cop who must solve it all. 9. The Handmaiden

In terms of unusual pairings, “The Handmaiden’s” duo of a con guy and a juvenile pickpocket is wildly fulfilling. This psychological thriller begins with this team’s attempts to scam a gullible heiress called Hideko, as the pickpocket, Sook-hee, persuades her to marry the con man, Count Fujiwara. This is, of course, merely the beginning of this South Korean thriller. Betrayal and sexuality combine with razor-sharp psychological pleasures to create “The Handmaiden” not just compelling but also enjoyable.

8. I See You

The thriller genre is intriguing since it may contain so many different types of films. Political thrillers, sci-fi thrillers, criminal thrillers, and historical thrillers are only a few examples. The finest ones offer a sense of psychological unease, often bordering on dread. “I See You” is one of those disturbing works, a stalker-meets-poltergeist scare that takes your worst fear and places it right outside your suburban door, complete with spooky masks, kid abductions, and all sorts of inexplicable incidents that may or may not be supernatural.

  • Starring: Helen Hunt, Jon Tenney, Owen Teague
  • Director: Adam Randall
  • Year: 2019
  • Runtime: 96 minutes
  • Rating: NR
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 79%

7. The Protege

The ultra-skilled assassin who seeks vengeance after losing her mentor is hardly a new thriller movie theme, but “The Protege” contains enough unique thrills to make it worthwhile to see. It’s the narrative of Maggie Q’s trained killer and her quest for the individuals who killed the guy who taught her, and it has an all-star ensemble that includes Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson, as well as the elegant work of director Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”) to fully sell the notion.

  • Starring: Maggie Q, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson
  • Director: Martin Campbell
  • Year: 2021
  • Runtime: 108 minutes
  • Rating: NR
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 61%

6. A Taxi Driver: Thriller Movies In Amazon Prime

South Korean cinema has produced some of the finest films you’ve never seen, particularly in the thriller genre. It was difficult to miss when “Parasite” shattered a slew of milestones at the 2020 Academy Trophies, becoming the first non-English-language film to win “Best Picture” and sweeping the night with four awards. However, South Korean cinema has been accomplishing incredible things for a long time.

A noteworthy example is “A Taxi Driver,” which shares a prominent actor, Song Kang-ho, with “Parasite!” It’s the gripping, emotionally evocative true-life account of a cab driver in Seoul who accidentally becomes enmeshed in the events of the 1980 Gwangju Uprising, which encompassed demonstrators, martial law, and 2,000 deaths.

  • Starring: Song Kang-ho, Thomas Kretschmann, Yoo Hae-jin
  • Director: Jang Hoon
  • Year: 2017
  • Runtime: 137 minutes
  • Rating: Not Rated
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 96%

5. Unbreakable: Thriller Movies In Amazon Prime

M. Night Shyamalan’s follow-up to the tremendous success of “The Sixth Sense” is a unique take on superhero stories. This dark and moody story delves into the connection of two guys who are on opposing ends of the physical strength spectrum. There’s seemingly regular David Dunne, who learns he’s practically invulnerable, and the frail Elijah Price, who’s fascinated with finding real-life superheroes. It’s not as flashy as “The Sixth Sense,” but it remains one of Shyamalan’s most fascinating films.

  • Starring: Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Robin Wright
  • Director: M. Night Shyamalan
  • Year: 2000
  • Runtime: 106 minutes
  • Rating: NR
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 70%

4. The Usual Suspects: Thriller Movies In Amazon Prime

Certain films, regardless of genre, are mandatory viewing, and “The Usual Suspects” is one of them – a picture that fits a multitude of labels and delivers on each of them. It’s a thriller, a crime drama, and even a little comedy. The neo-noir plot benefits from a dubious narrator, as the account of a massacre is narrated in a complicated manner by a con artist who is being interrogated. The plot structure and narration just add to the suspense as we discover what truly transpired behind a robbery gone tragically wrong.

  • Starring: Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Benicio del Toro
  • Director: Bryan Singer
  • Year: 1995
  • Runtime: 106 minutes
  • Rating: NR
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89%

3. Vivarium: Thriller Movies In Amazon Prime

There’s a narrow line between exhilarating and downright unsettling, and “Vivarium” practically jumps ropes on that edge. The film takes the intrinsic urge of the restless spirit to escape the mundane suburban existence and amplifies it to the point that you get cabin fever just watching it.

In terms of narrative, young lovers Tom and Gemma are looking for a house, but when they visit a cookie-cutter community, they find themselves trapped and unable to leave. Things get even creepier when a “child” appears on their doorstep with orders to release them if they care for the youngster. Seeing a couple locked in an unending subdivision of similar dwellings and forced to raise a humanoid monster as their child. It’s not for everyone, but it’s part of the peculiar pleasure that dazzled and repelled reviewers and spectators alike.

  • Starring: Imogen Poots, Jesse Eisenberg, Jonathan Aris
  • Director: Lorcan Finnegan
  • Year: 2020
  • Runtime: 98 minutes
  • Rating: NR
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 72%

2. We Need to Talk About Kevin: Thriller Movies In Amazon Prime

Seriously, why don’t the parents in this movie just do what the title suggests? Why don’t they simply focus on Kevin? Who knows how things might have turned out differently if they had — albeit the narrative would almost surely have been less exciting.

As it now stands, this is a slow-burning journey into psychopathy and familial dysfunction, portrayed through a beautiful lens of suburban life broken by an unthinkable catastrophe. It’s so unfathomable that it — and the nefarious dynamics that lead to it — can only be disclosed ominously piece by ominous piece as the film progresses, as seen through the lens of a mother’s troubled connection with her extremely disturbed son.

  • Starring: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller
  • Director: Lynne Ramsay
  • Year: 2011
  • Runtime: 112 minutes
  • Rating: NR
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 75%

1. You Were Never Really Here: Thriller Movies In Amazon Prime

If you don’t have a strong stomach and mind, you might want to “not be here” for “You Were Never Really Here,” which takes an unflinching look at difficult subjects including human trafficking and PTSD. The narrative revolves around Joe, a disturbed man paid to rescue abducted females by whatever means necessary. But when Joe is recruited to discover a missing New York senator’s daughter, he is sucked into a violent, complex scheme. “You Were Never Really Here,” a white-knuckle rescue ride with a riveting psychological twist, is boosted by Joaquin Phoenix’s outstanding performance.

  • Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Judith Roberts, Ekaterina Samsonov
  • Director: Lynne Ramsay
  • Year: 2017
  • Runtime: 89 minutes
  • Rating: NR
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89%
